Gezeravcı Rockets into History as First Turkish Astronaut in Axiom Space Mission Launch
A team including Türkiye's first astronaut and three other members embarked on a journey to the International Space Station (ISS) on Thursday, marking a "historic" moment for the country, as noted by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, attached to a Falcon 9 rocket, lifted off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center, starting a planned 36-hour flight to the ISS.
Alper Gezeravcı, Türkiye's first space traveler, is joined by a Swedish and an Italian astronaut, all with military pilot backgrounds. Accompanying them is a retired NASA astronaut working for Texas startup Axiom Space, the company facilitating this private flight.
The capsule is expected to reach the space station early on Saturday, where the team will spend two weeks conducting experiments, engaging with schoolchildren, and marveling at Earth's views before heading home.
Gezeravcı, expressing his excitement from orbit, quoted Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, emphasizing, "The future is in the skies." He shared his gratitude for the privilege of being part of the mission, acknowledging the efforts that led to this moment.
Erdoğan, who has been actively involved in the mission, emphasized its significance, stating that Türkiye is entering the "Century of Türkiye" with this manned space mission. He highlighted the country's role as heirs to a civilization contributing significantly to the history of science.
The Axiom-3 mission aligns with Türkiye's National Space Program goals, announced in early 2021. The crew includes Sweden's Marcus Wandt and Italian Air Force Col. Walter Villadei, bringing a blend of nationalities and experiences to the historic journey.
Symbolic items from each astronaut's homeland, such as a Nobel Prize medal from Sweden, fusilli pasta from Italy, and tokens representing Türkiye's nomadic culture, accompany them on their voyage.
The SpaceX Dragon, operating autonomously, is set to dock with the ISS on Saturday, showcasing the ongoing collaboration between Axiom Space, NASA, and SpaceX. Axiom Space, headed by a former NASA ISS program manager, is among the companies working on a commercial space station to succeed the ISS, slated for retirement around 2030.
Reflecting on the broader impact, Turkish officials expressed the significance of this mission for Türkiye's future endeavors in space exploration. The journey, a culmination of years of anticipation, is viewed as a historic milestone, paving the way for Türkiye's space ambitions and contributing to the global community's space exploration efforts.
