Imagining a World Without Them
Welcome to Solutions Review's Contributed Content Series, where we hear from smart folks in the world of business software. Today, Rohan Ramesh from Entrust dives into a question that's been on many minds: What if we lived in a world without passwords? Let's see if this password-free world is something we can actually achieve.
Passwords are everywhere. Whether it's logging into your favorite streaming service, your social media hangout, or your mobile banking app, or just trying to get into your work emails and files, passwords are a constant. But here's the kicker – 51 percent of us reset our passwords at least once a month because, let's face it, we forget them. And get this, 74 percent of people would rather use fancy biometrics like fingerprints instead.
People are fed up with always having to type in their credentials for different apps and websites. Those password manager things are becoming less helpful and some want you to pay for them. This leads to bad habits like using weak and recycled passwords, and that's a jackpot for hackers.
This password struggle has gotten so real that some cyber safety board members want the government to scrap passwords nationwide. But what would that actually look like, and how can businesses get ready for it?
Imagine a World Without Passwords
Can we really pull off this no-password thing? Turns out, we kinda already use it with our phones. You know, the fingerprint or face ID thing. People dig it because it's easier and safer than passwords. So, what's the deal with going passwordless?
Better User Experience: People hate passwords because they're hard to remember and a pain. Going passwordless, paired with some extra security steps, can make things safe without the headache. It only adds a bit of friction when you need an extra check, based on some risk score that looks at stuff like your IP address and how you usually behave.
Stronger Security: While not all passwordless tech is bulletproof, some use biometrics with anti-phishing tricks, like digital certificates or special key pairs. This makes it harder for bad actors to take over your account.
Saves Money: Passwords cost time and money for everyone – you, your boss, and the IT folks. No passwords mean no resetting and no worries about big breaches. Using better and safer passwordless tricks, like certificate-based authentication, can save companies some cash in the long run.
What Businesses Need to Think About
If a company wants to jump on this passwordless train, they need to check what they're doing now and where they can improve. Some places still rely too much on just passwords or use not-so-great multi-factor stuff. We know everything's going digital, and people want new, digital ways to prove who they are, quick and easy.
Making the passwordless move is an investment in security. But how much it costs depends on the size of your user gang and what tech you already use. Even if you have to buy new gear, getting a high-security passwordless setup with cool extras like proximity detection and certificate-based tricks will be worth it.
But going passwordless doesn't mean tossing out all your physical IDs. Nope, those will still be important for proving who you are. In the future, we might use our passport to sign up for digital stuff, showing a picture of it online or scanning a chip with our phone. This could be the new way of doing things at work too.
A Password-Free Tomorrow
A world without passwords can make things safer, cheaper, and put smiles on the faces of employees and customers. People want new, quick ways to show who they are online. That's where decentralized identity comes in. If this idea takes off, folks can share only the ID info they want when they want. It takes the power away from big companies and passwords, giving people control over their own IDs. This can make daily verification way easier and safer for things like travel, online shopping, and more. Sounds like a password-free future could be the way to go.
