OnePlus Might Unveil Their Initial Wear OS Smartwatch at MWC 2024
OnePlus has made significant progress since its debut smartphone, now offering impressive flagship models like the OnePlus 11 and OnePlus Open. However, the initial OnePlus Watch didn't quite capture attention. News surfaced in November about a sequel, and now a reliable source hints at the OnePlus Watch 2 unveiling.
Max Jambor on X, via Android Authority, suggests the OnePlus Watch 2 will debut at MWC 2024, happening from February 26 to 29 in Barcelona, Spain. If the November leak is accurate, this would mark OnePlus' first smartwatch with Wear OS from the start, a significant upgrade from the previous custom operating system that faced issues at launch.
Render leaks from November provide a glimpse of the OnePlus Watch 2, showcasing a larger 1.43-inch AMOLED screen, an improvement from the 1.39-inch display on the original. The renders also reveal a raised area on the right side housing two hardware buttons.
Under the hood, the Watch 2 is anticipated to run on the Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 chip, shared with the Google Pixel Watch 2. The highlight, however, is the inclusion of Wear OS 4, offering access to the Play Store and various software improvements. The price remains unknown, but considering the original OnePlus Watch started at $159, the second-gen model may be priced higher.
While the OnePlus 12 launch event on Tuesday might have seemed like the ideal time for the Watch 2 release, Jambor's latest information indicates it's not quite ready. Still, the January 23 "Smooth Beyond Belief" event promises excitement, with the launch of OnePlus Buds 3 and the global release of the company's 2024 flagship.
OnePlus' lineup of wearables can be a bit confusing, especially with the India-exclusive Nord Watch in 2022 priced just under $60. The manufacturer also ventured into the fitness tracker segment in 2021, though without notable success.
