Walmart Set to Clear Out Physical Games Starting Next Week, Reports Say

It seems Walmart is getting ready to part ways with some of its physical video games, marking another step into the digital age that has been reshaping the landscape for quite some time. In the past, everything had to be purchased on a CD or disc, but with the evolution of the internet, accessibility to media through digital means has become the norm. Songs, movies, and now even video games are easily downloadable within hours, if not minutes. No more store visits are necessary; you can buy and download a game right when it releases, or even before, enabling immediate play upon availability. While convenient, this digital shift raises concerns about ownership, as one day the license for these games could potentially be revoked, rendering them unplayable unless already installed on your hardware.

As we move further into this digital future, access to physical media is dwindling. Best Buy has streamlined its movie section, and other retailers like Target have significantly scaled down their movie offerings. Now, it appears video games might be the next to go. According to reports by Andrew Marmo and Wario64 on Twitter, Walmart is rumored to be clearing out Xbox games, including titles like Starfield, starting next week. An internal memo circulating online states that all copies will be marked down to 3 cents, with sales blocked by the store's system before removal. Currently, this seems to be specific to Xbox games, as reported last October. Interestingly, the memo suggests that Microsoft is backing this move for Walmart, indicating it might be Microsoft's decision rather than Walmart's. However, the fact that Microsoft is voluntarily removing one of its major games from the shelves of a major retailer raises concerns for enthusiasts of physical media.

The reasons behind Microsoft's support for this move are unclear at the moment. It could suggest that Xbox is leaning more towards a digital-only future. Leaks have hinted at a future Xbox model being digital only, although the timing and certainty of such a move remain uncertain. The impact on other video games, especially PlayStation titles, is also uncertain. Walmart's removal of games seems limited to Xbox, but only time will reveal the full picture. Starfield, released in September, may have had a short shelf life at Walmart, but it will likely remain available at other retailers like GameStop for the time being. We've reached out to Microsoft for comment and will update this story with any response.
